Used Quicken on my Mac 'forever.' Presently Quicken 2007 (16.2.4). I was Christmas presented with Quicken 2016 for Mac purchased from COSTCO. I haven't opened the box yet. I am in the process of migrating from my old (circa late 2008) MacBook to my new MacBook Pro (Touchbar) I hope to be up and running for the NewYear. So the question is, if I load the 'new' Quicken 2016 for Mac on the new MacBook, are there any 'gotcha's' I should worry about? What would I gain in Quicken 2018 for Mac (other than an annoying annual 'rent payment?'
If I do decide to go with 2018, is there a reason not to install 2016 then upgrade? Or, should I go directly to 2018? Thank you for your service. Great question about 2016 and 2018. You can use Quicken 2016 until April 30, 2019 without having to worry about upgrading.
If you do start with 2016, you can setup your accounts, budgets and whatever else you would like and use it until the end of support period date provided above. If you wanted to go to 2018, you would indeed be in a subscription period which lasts one year and is auto-renewable, but you would have the latest version of Quicken. It is your decision. RespectfullyQuicken Harold. You shouldn't have any technical 'gotchas', other than 2016 being a much different program than 2007. I don't consider that a bad thing. The main differences between 2016 versus 2018 is that the latter has a newer sidebar with different balance options, improvements in the investment portfolio view, (slight) improvements in multi-currency support, some new reports built off the new report engine, loan amortization, and a few other odds and ends.
You can go from either 2007 to 2016 or 2018 directly. It doesn't matter. If you received this as a gift and don't plan on returning it, then you might as well install/try it.

One question: was this box from Costco a box with a download & activation key, or one with a CD? Your new MBP doesn't have an optical drive.
If you are talking about purchasing QM18, you should be aware that you can purchase from retailers with 24 or 27 month subscription terms at a (probably) lower cost per month of use. As John mentions, QM15-18 is very different than QM07. It may take some getting used to, but once you do, it should be fine. Here's a basic comparison of QM18 and QM07: You may want to take a look at smayer97's post here: It is a comprehensive review of considerations in moving from QM07 to QM17.
Finally, you can view the release notes for QM15-17 here: That will give you detailed info on what's been added each year. I suggest that you make sure that Quicken 2016 ORĀ 2018 for Mac will meet your needs, since it is not an upgrade from QM2007 but rather from Quicken Essentials (which was re-written from the ground up, starting in 2010), so there are some features that are still not there e.g. Full loan amortization., 2-line display, QuickMath, or are not as fully developed yet, e.g. Customized Reports, performance reports and stats (therefore some data may not carry over). You can start here:.NOTE: Support for fixed rate loans has been released as of QM2017 v4.5.x but there is no announced timing for support for variable rate or simple daily interest loans. Currently, the main advantages of QM2018 over QM2007 include the ability to sync cash, bank, and credit card accounts using Quicken Mobile for mobile devices (iOS and Android) and the ability to save receipts with transactions via computer or mobile device.
There are a few other minor features that QM2007 does not have. Note that it has been announced that security fixes have ceased for QM2007 since QM2017 is released.see yet online access will continue as long as the FI/Bank supports it and their security updates don't prevent it. Please note that QM2018 is now a subscription-based product currently available for 1 year directly from Quicken or 2 yrs from retailers (which are often cheaper than Quicken).
(If you are able to find QM2017 which is a pre-subscription product, it is supported until April 2020). You may want to review the. Add your vote to any features that are missing for you. Your VOTES matter!
Thank you very much for the very detailed post. I'll read the material at the links. For me, 'Essentials' had effectively no investment tracking, which was my initial reason for using work-arounds on older PowerPC versions (for a while I even used an old PowerPC Mac for all my bookkeeping even though I had a newer 'Intel' machine.) until the 'new' QM 2007 came out.
I was given to understand QM2007 was basically a 'tweak and re-compile' of the older version. A handful of years ago I experimented with several other bookkeeping programs, including their iOS apps. I ended up sticking with QM 2007. Maybe it's gotten better since, but I found the iOS apps to be a huge time suck, with very little payoff. Thanks again.
